Etienne Hugel Lunch on 11 January 2014 - The Alsace Society. Chapter Four, Winter 2013/4

Hot on the heels of our very successful AGM in September, I am excited to let you know that Etienne Hugel, the 12th-generation proprietor of Hugel et Fils, Riquewihr, has (again) gracefully agreed to host the Society to a lunch with Hugel wines on Saturday, 11 January 2014.

Etienne Hugel, bringing some amazing wines out to Singapore for our lunch!

Wine Selection - A Focus on Riesling

Those who were present at the Society's inaugural Chapter may recall Etienne saying "Trimbach believe they make better Gewurz than we do, but I know that we make better Rieslings than they do!"  This is a big call, particularly for those fond of Trimbach's legendary Riesling Clos Ste Hune and rather more accessible Riesling Cuvée Frédéric-Emile.

Because I lack manners and breeding, I challenged Etienne to back up his bold statement this year.  Eternally game, he will import exclusively for this lunch two mini-verticals of top Hugel Rieslings, dry and elegant grands crus from the famous Schoenenbourg vineyard and Hugel's signature late-harvest wines, along with various aged Hugel vintages to accompany a fine Alsatian menu from Stéphane Istel of Bar-Roque Grill.  As an added surprise, watch out for the finale of traditional Alsatian desserts, a sweet end to what will undoubtedly be a brilliant lunch.

The programme is below:

2011 Hugel Gentil - a refreshing traditional Alsatian white blend, a great value quaffer.

As far as I know, this may well be the most impressive line-up of wines at an Alsace wine event ever in Singapore.  Part-raconteur, part-entertainer, fully passionate about his family's wines and Alsace itself, Etienne Hugel will keep the fun rolling as he leads the tasting flights with his unique sense of humour.   Joining him will be his new wife Kaoru, who will lend her graceful elegance and sommelière know-how to our session.  Attendees at our inaugural Chapter in January 2013 will recall that Etienne and Kaoru were then merely engaged, so this will also be a chance to welcome the newlyweds back to Singapore in true Alsace Society fashion!

As always, we are working on a cover-costs-only basis, so this event represents absolutely tremendous value.

Limited spaces are available, so if you aren't already on the Society mailing list and would like to attend, please drop me an email at julianswriting@gmail.com.
